TCM Respiratory Protocol

Lieque (LU-7), Taiyuan (LU-9), Shanzhong (CV-17) and Dazhui (DU-14) form a complete protocol for strengthening the Lung, treating cough and recurrent respiratory infections. In TCM, the Lung governs Qi and respiration, and its balance determines the strength of Wei Qi (defensive immunity).

Benefits attributed to it

  • Strengthens Lung Qi
  • Relieves acute and chronic cough
  • Reduces recurrent respiratory infections
  • Improves respiratory capacity
  • Strengthens Wei Qi (defenses)
  • Benefits the throat and voice

The Lung in TCM

The Lung governs Qi and respiration. Controls skin and hair, and distributes Wei Qi across the body's surface. Lung deficiency leads to chronic cough, greater susceptibility to colds and dry skin. Wind-Cold is the main aggressor of the Lung.

Lieque (列缺 - LU-7)

Luo-Connecting point of Lung and opening of Ren Mai. Releases the exterior, treats cough and acute cold.

Taiyuan (太渊 - LU-9)

Yuan-Source of Lung. Influential point of vessels. Tonifies Lung Yin, treats chronic cough.

Shanzhong (膻中 - CV-17)

Influential point of Qi. Regulates chest Qi, descends rebellious Qi, treats asthma and chest oppression.

Step by step

  1. Lieque (LU-7) and Taiyuan (LU-9) Bilateral

LU-7 releases the exterior for acute cough. LU-9 nourishes Lung Yin for chronic weakness. Using them together tonifies the entire Lung meridian.

    Duration
    2 minutes
    • For acute cough: LU-7 with dispersing technique
    • For chronic weakness: tonify LU-9 clockwise
    • Always coordinate with diaphragmatic breathing
  2. Shanzhong (CV-17) - Chest Qi Point

CV-17 on the sternum is the influential point of Qi. Opens the chest, descends rebellious Qi (cough, asthma, hiccup) and regulates all breathing.

    Duration
    1.5 minutes
    • Visualize breathing flowing freely through the chest
    • Combine with expansive costal breathing
    • For asthma: light pressure + gentle breathing
  3. Dazhui (DU-14) - Great Vertebra

DU-14 is the great Yang point, meeting of all Yang meridians. Reinforces the immune system, expels Wind-Cold and treats fever at the onset of a cold.

    Duration
    1.5 minutes
    • Rubbing DU-14 activates Yang — ideal at first sign of cold
    • Combine with LI-4 to enhance Wind-expelling action

Respiratory Care

  • Drink hot water with honey and ginger
  • Protect neck and back from cold
  • Practice diaphragmatic breathing for 5 min
  • Ventilate the room with clean air

Contraindications

  • In severe acute asthma, seek emergency care first
  • DU-14 with caution in severe hypotension
  • LU-9 extremely careful — radial artery
