Micro-lesson

The external techniques and what each is for

They are neither decoration nor second-rate alternatives: each does one concrete thing well that the needle does not do as well.

Moxa
adds heat: cold and yang deficiency
Cupping
mobilises what is stuck in the surface and the muscle
Gua sha
releases trapped heat and unblocks stiff areas
Massage
opens the way before needling and reaches where needles frighten

Common mistake: Choosing the technique out of habit or because the patient likes it, instead of because the principle asks for it.

Micro-lesson

What the patient does between sessions

One weekly session competes with twenty-one meals and seven nights. In background pictures, what happens outside the consulting room usually weighs more than what happens inside.

Dietetics
temperature and nature of what is eaten, not calories
Timing
when they eat and when they sleep
Gentle movement
moves qi without spending it
Breath and stillness
what pays off most in stagnation

Common mistake: Handing over a long list of recommendations. Two concrete, sustained changes are worth more than fifteen that never happen.
