Full Heat in the Small Intestine

In plain words

Their mouth is full of ulcers, they sleep badly, and on top of that it stings when they urinate.

This is a pattern of transit, not of origin: the Fire starts in the Heart and descends to the Small Intestine, its paired organ. That is why both ends of the route show at once: above, the tongue — where the Heart opens — ulcerates and reddens at the tip; below, Heat concentrates the urine and makes it scanty, dark and burning. What usually lights it is sustained mental agitation: worry, over-stimulation, short nights. Treating the mouth alone resolves nothing, because the fire is being generated above.

Characteristic symptoms

  • Mouth and tongue ulcers, especially at the tip
  • Burning on urination with scanty, very dark urine
  • Sometimes blood in the urine
  • Marked irritability and restlessness
  • Light, agitated sleep and insomnia
  • Thirst with a desire for cold drinks
  • Sensation of heat in the chest
  • Lower abdominal pain with distension

Key clues to recognize it

  • The ulcers cluster at the tip of the tongue, which is the Heart area, not on the cheeks.
  • Two apparently unrelated things coincide: mouth sores and burning urination.
  • Mental restlessness is part of the pattern, not a consequence: they sleep badly even when exhausted.

Tongue and pulse

Tongue
Red tongue with a markedly red, sometimes ulcerated tip; yellow coating
Pulse
Rapid (shuò) and overflowing pulse, clearest at the left cùn position

Treatment principle

Clear Heart Fire and drain it through the Small Intestine; promote urination and calm the mind

Reference formula

What not to confuse it with

What aggravates it

  • Short nights and screens until late: the Heart never powers down and the fire feeds itself.
  • Coffee, alcohol and spice, especially in the afternoon.
  • Spells of intense worry or mental overload with no rest in between.

Lifestyle advice

Cut down on spicy food, alcohol, coffee and stimulants; increase water intake so Heat is carried out in the urine. Helpful foods: watermelon, cucumber, celery, mung bean, bamboo-leaf or lotus tea. Protect night-time rest, since the pattern feeds on mental agitation. If ulcers recur for months, if fever appears, or if there is blood in the urine, rule out medical causes before treating the pattern alone.
