Immune System Strengthening

This ancient acupressure technique works on specific points of the Lung (LU-7) and Large Intestine (LI-4) meridians, known for their ability to strengthen Wei Qi (defensive energy). Wei Qi is equivalent to the immune system in Western medicine.

Benefits attributed to it

  • Strengthens the body's natural defenses
  • Prevents colds and flu
  • Improves defensive Qi circulation
  • Balances the respiratory system

TCM Theoretical Foundations

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Wei Qi circulates on the body's surface, between skin and muscles, protecting against external pathogenic factors (wind, cold, heat, humidity). When Wei Qi is strong, the body resists illness better.

Wei Qi (卫气)

Defensive energy circulating on the body surface. Produced by the Spleen from food and distributed by the Lung.

Hegu Point (合谷 - LI-4)

Master point for face and head. Known as 'Great Eliminator', expels wind and releases the exterior.

Lieque Point (列缺 - LU-7)

Luo (connecting) point of the Lung meridian. Releases exterior, benefits head and neck, strengthens Wei Qi.

Step by step

  1. Locating Hegu Point (LI-4)

Hegu point is on the back of the hand, at the highest point of the muscle between thumb and index finger when held together.

    Duration
    30 seconds per hand
    • Use the thumb of the opposite hand to apply pressure
    • Angle should be perpendicular to skin surface
    • Maintain pressure for 30 seconds
    • Breathe deeply while applying pressure
  2. Stimulating Lieque Point (LU-7)

Lieque is the Luo (connecting) point of the Lung meridian. Its name means 'Broken Sequence', reflecting its ability to 'break' and expel external pathogenic factors.

    Duration
    45 seconds per wrist
    • Use the 'crossed handshake' method for easy localization
    • Point is in a depression between two tendons
    • Feel the radial pulse as reference (close but not on it)
    • Keep wrist relaxed, not tense
  3. Repetition and Energetic Closing

Repetition on both body sides ensures energetic balance. Energetic closing seals the work done and distributes the fortified Qi.

    Duration
    1 minute
    • Maintain mindfulness throughout the sequence
    • Don't rush - quality over quantity
    • Feel the heat in your palms before closing
    • Breathe toward CV-17 point during closing

After Practice

  • Drink warm water to help Qi circulation
  • Avoid exposure to wind or cold immediately after
  • Rest 5-10 minutes if possible
  • Observe any changes in your energy or body sensations

Contraindications

  • Do not apply during pregnancy on point LI-4
  • Avoid if there are wounds or inflammation in the area
  • Consult a professional for serious medical conditions
