A dark, velvety sweet soup of ground black sesame with rice, a traditional winter dessert.

Ingredients (2 servings)

  • ½ cup gently toasted black sesame Black sesame
  • 3 tablespoons rice, soaked 1 hour Rice
  • 2–3 walnuts (optional) Walnut
  • 2 cups water and sugar or honey to taste Honey

Preparation

  1. Blend the sesame, drained rice, and walnuts with the water until smooth.
  2. Strain for an even silkier texture.
  3. Cook gently, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 8–10 minutes.
  4. Sweeten moderately and serve hot in small bowls.

Traditional reading

Black sesame is traditionally linked with Liver and Kidney and healthy-aging repertoires; rice gives body and softens the seed’s density.

Variations

  • Swap part of the sesame for roasted peanuts for another classic reading.
  • With plant milk instead of water it turns creamier.
