A study recipe associated with the Yin-deficiency-prone constitution (阴虚质, Yīn Xū Zhì): a warm sweet soup of poached pear with lily bulb and lotus seed.

Ingredients (3 servings)

  • 2 Asian or conference pears, peeled and cut in wedges Asian pear
  • 1 edible lily bulb, separated into petals Lily bulb
  • ½ cup lotus seeds, soaked 2 hours Lotus seed
  • 1 tablespoon goji berries (at the end) Goji berry
  • 4 cups water and a little rock sugar

Preparation

  1. Simmer the lotus seeds in the water gently 25 minutes.
  2. Add the pear and cook 15 minutes; add the lily bulb for the last 8 minutes.
  3. Sweeten very lightly and stir in the goji berries off the heat.
  4. Serve warm, also as an evening dessert.

Traditional reading

The texts associate this constitution with cool, "moistening" foods: pear, lily bulb, and lotus seed, gently cooked with little sugar. It is studied as an example of the dryness repertoire, not as a way to treat actual heat or dryness sensations.

Variations

  • Steamed inside the hollowed pear is the classic autumn presentation.
  • With oat flakes it becomes a dry-season breakfast.

Precautions

Use only food-grade edible lily and remove the bitter lotus germ. Goji may interact with anticoagulants such as warfarin; with diabetes reduce the sweetener and count the fruit. Constitution is determined with a professional; this recipe is study material, not a personal plan.
