Damp-Heat in the Bladder

In plain words

They go to the toilet constantly, pass very little, and it burns when they do.

The Bladder is where the body finishes separating the clear from the turbid. When Damp gathers below and heats up — from holding urine, external heat, too much alcohol and sugar, or intercourse without emptying afterwards — the urine thickens and burns on the way out. Because Damp is sticky, it is hard to expel: hence the feeling of never finishing and the urgency that returns minutes later. If the pattern climbs the channel, back pain and fever appear, and then it is no longer only the Bladder.

Characteristic symptoms

  • Frequent, urgent urination in small amounts
  • Burning or stinging in the urethra when passing water
  • Cloudy, dark, strong-smelling urine
  • Feeling of incomplete emptying
  • Suprapubic pain or heaviness
  • Sometimes blood in the urine or gravel
  • Low fever and a feeling of heat
  • Low back pain if the pattern moves upward

Key clues to recognize it

  • It burns on urination and the urine comes out dark and cloudy, not clear: that rules out a cold or deficient pattern from the start.
  • The frequency goes with urgency and small amounts; it is not passing a lot, it is wanting to pass a lot.
  • The yellow greasy coating concentrates at the root of the tongue, which corresponds to the lower abdomen.

Tongue and pulse

Tongue
Red tongue with a yellow greasy coating, thicker at the root
Pulse
Rapid (shuò) and slippery pulse; often full at the chǐ position

Treatment principle

Clear Heat and drain Damp from the Bladder; promote urination and free the urinary passages

Common points

Reference formula

Ba Zheng San (Eight Corrections Powder); Wu Ling San if Damp dominates over Heat

What not to confuse it with

What aggravates it

  • Holding urine for hours.
  • Alcohol, coffee, sugar and spice, which thicken and heat the urine.
  • Tight synthetic underwear, and not emptying the bladder after sex.

Lifestyle advice

Drink water regularly and do not hold urine. Avoid alcohol, coffee, spicy food and sugar, which feed Damp-Heat. Gentle intimate hygiene, cotton underwear, and pass urine after sex. Local warmth on the lower abdomen eases the spasm, not the infection. High fever, severe back pain, vomiting, pregnancy or blood in the urine require medical assessment: a urinary infection can ascend to the kidney and need antibiotics.
