Kidney Essence Deficiency (Jing)

In plain words

The body's calendar is out of step: in a child everything arrives late — teeth, walking, speech — and in an adult everything arrives early — grey hair, loose teeth, a memory that slips, bones that break with little.

Chinese medicine describes a background reserve you are born with that sets the pace of growing, reproducing and ageing: it underwrites bones, teeth, hearing and memory. Part of it is given at birth — hence the childhood cases — and the rest is topped up daily by what you eat, how you sleep and how you breathe. When the daily top-up falls short of the spending for years, the reserve drops and the body's clock runs ahead. The constitutional part is not chosen; the rate at which the remainder is spent largely is.

Characteristic symptoms

  • In children: growth retardation, late fontanelle closure, mental retardation
  • In adults: premature aging, progressive general weakness
  • Poor memory and cognitive decline
  • Hair loss and premature gray or white hair
  • Loose teeth or premature tooth loss
  • Weak and brittle bones, tendency to fractures
  • Infertility and decreased reproductive function
  • Chronic hearing and vision problems

Key clues to recognize it

  • What fails is structural, not functional: bone, tooth, hair, hearing and memory together.
  • Biological age does not match the age on the card, in one direction or the other.
  • There is neither marked cold nor afternoon heat: this picture has no temperature of its own, only scarcity.

Tongue and pulse

Tongue
Thin tongue, pale or red depending on whether Yang or Yin predominates; scanty coating
Pulse
Thin (xì), deep (chén) and weak pulse, especially in bilateral chi

Treatment principle

Replenish Kidney Essence, nourish Marrow and strengthen the fundamental constitution

What not to confuse it with

What aggravates it

  • Stringing together years of insufficient sleep with no recovery periods.
  • Sustained physical or mental work with no breaks and no real holidays.
  • A poor, monotonous diet that fails to cover the basics over a long stretch.
  • Chronic illness lived through without rest, and pregnancies or births very close together.

Lifestyle advice

Respect natural rest cycles: sleep enough and conserve energy. Avoid extreme physical and sexual exhaustion. Eat Essence-nourishing foods: fish roe, bone marrow, seaweed, black sesame seeds, pork or lamb kidneys in moderation. Practice kidney Qi Gong. Meditate regularly to preserve Jing.
