Kidney Not Grasping Qi

In plain words

They struggle to fill the chest with air: the breath stops high and short, leaving the feeling of an in-breath never finished; the smallest effort leaves them winded, with a cold lower back and cold feet.

In this framework air comes in from above, but it is the body's base that pulls it down and settles it. When that base weakens — with the years, after long respiratory illness or through exhaustion — it stops holding the in-breath, and the air floats in the upper chest. That is why the shortness shows on breathing in rather than out, and why it comes together with a cold lower back, abundant urine and background fatigue.

Characteristic symptoms

  • Chronic breathing difficulty, especially on inspiration
  • Exertional dyspnea that worsens with movement
  • Shallow breathing and sensation of not filling with air
  • Weak and forceless voice
  • Spontaneous sweating with minimal effort
  • Cold in the lumbar region and knees
  • Cold extremities, especially feet
  • Chronic fatigue and exhaustion

Key clues to recognize it

  • Breathing in is harder than breathing out: that is the clue that separates it from everything else.
  • Breathlessness comes on with minimal effort and brings sweat without any real exertion.
  • Alongside the breathing there are base signs: cold lower back and knees, cold feet, abundant urine.

Tongue and pulse

Tongue
Pale or slightly red tongue depending on Yin or Yang predominance; may be moist
Pulse
Weak (ruò) and deep (chén) pulse, especially in the Chi (Kidney) position

Treatment principle

Tonify Kidney Yang, strengthen Qi grasping and nourish the Lung

Common points

Reference formula

Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan + Ge Jie (Golden Cabinet Kidney Qi Pill + Gecko)

What not to confuse it with

What aggravates it

  • Climbing stairs, carrying weight or any effort that used to be easy.
  • Cold and dry winter air, and talking for long stretches.
  • Tobacco and stale or polluted air.
  • Stringing short nights together: the breathlessness the next day is always worse.

Lifestyle advice

Avoid excessive physical exertion that exhausts the Qi of Lung and Kidney. Practice deep abdominal breathing: inhale slowly and let the Kidney capture the air. Keep the lumbar region and feet warm. Eat foods that nourish Kidney Yang: walnuts, black sesame seeds, mulberries, lamb.
